Bitvavo is one of the most popular crypto exchanges among Belgian investors. But when it comes to filing your tax return, correctly processing your complete transaction history is no simple task. In this article we explain how Cryptotax automatically imports and processes your Bitvavo transactions for your Belgian tax return.

1. The challenge with Bitvavo data

Bitvavo exports your transaction history as a single CSV file. That sounds straightforward, but there are subtleties involved:

  • Time zones: Bitvavo uses the time zone of your account (usually Europe/Amsterdam). For correct tax calculations, everything must be converted to UTC.
  • Multiple transaction types: A single export contains trades (buy/sell), deposits, withdrawals, and staking rewards all mixed together.
  • Fees: Trading costs appear in separate columns and must be correctly linked to the right transaction.
  • Staking rewards: Bitvavo distributes staking rewards with the status "distributed", and these must be recognized separately as taxable income.

Manual processing is error-prone, especially if you have several years of history or also use other exchanges.

2. Automatic import via Cryptotax

Cryptotax reads your complete Bitvavo CSV and automatically recognizes:

  • Trades: buy and sell transactions with correct quote prices in EUR
  • Deposits and withdrawals: crypto and fiat movements in and out of your Bitvavo account
  • Staking rewards: rewards that Bitvavo distributes periodically
  • Fees: trading costs that are correctly included as a cost in the FIFO calculation

The time zone is detected automatically and all transactions are normalized to UTC.

3. What happens next

After importing, your transactions go through the full Cryptotax pipeline:

  1. Normalization: All Bitvavo transactions are converted to a standardized format, together with transactions from your other exchanges and wallets.
  2. FIFO calculation: Cryptotax applies the Belgian FIFO method to determine your cost basis per asset.
  3. Tax report: You receive an overview of your capital gains, capital losses, and taxable income (such as staking rewards), ready for your tax return.

4. Example: one year of Bitvavo history

Suppose in 2025 via Bitvavo you:

  • Executed 15 trades (buying and selling BTC, ETH, and other tokens)
  • Made 3 deposits and 2 withdrawals
  • Received monthly staking rewards on ETH

After import, Cryptotax calculates the capital gain or loss per trade based on your historical cost basis (FIFO). Staking rewards are reported separately as taxable income. The end result is a tax report you can use directly for your return.

5. How to use it yourself

  1. Export your transaction history from Bitvavo (Account → Transaction history → Export → CSV)
  2. Go to Cryptotax and click Exchanges
  3. Choose Bitvavo and upload your CSV file
  4. Cryptotax processes your transactions and generates your tax overview

6. Why this matters

With the introduction of DAC8, exchanges like Bitvavo automatically report your transactions to European tax authorities. The Belgian tax authority can compare your return against this data. A correct and complete transaction history is therefore no longer a luxury, it is a necessity.

Also remember to register your Bitvavo account with the Central Point of Contact (CAP).

Try Cryptotax for free and import your Bitvavo transactions in minutes.
