Aave integration for Belgian tax reporting
Cryptotax automatically detects your Aave deposits, loans, interest and any liquidations. Get a clear overview of what is taxable and what is not, directly in a Belgian-compliant report.
Connect your walletWhat is Aave?
Aave is the largest decentralised lending protocol on Ethereum and various L2s. Users can deposit tokens as collateral, earn interest and borrow other assets without a central counterparty.
Lending markets
Aave offers variable and stable interest rates for popular crypto assets. As a borrower you choose the market, Aave determines the rate based on supply and demand, and your collateral remains locked as long as the health factor stays positive.
aTokens and interest accrual
When you deposit, you receive aTokens that automatically accumulate interest. These tokens reflect your claim on the collateral plus accrued interest, which is fiscally relevant as movable income.
Liquidation risk
If your health factor drops below 1, your collateral is partially sold. This is a realisable transaction that potentially constitutes a taxable event and must therefore be tracked accurately.
What does Cryptotax support for Aave?
Our platform fetches blockchain data, identifies DeFi actions and translates everything into clear tax events.
Deposits & collateral
We recognise deposits into Aave pools and link them to the correct wallet or smart contract interaction. Collateralisations and withdrawals are logged separately so you can reconstruct your positions.
Interest & aToken growth
- Automatic calculation of interest credited via aTokens.
- Recognition of claimable rewards (stkAAVE, incentive distributions).
- Daily valuation in euros using CoinGecko prices.
Loans & repayments
- Analysis of every borrow action, including stable/variable rate.
- Full trace of repayments, debt swaps and rate switches.
- Detection of collateral swaps and flash loan interactions.
Liquidations & risk events
- Automatic tagging of partial or full liquidations.
- Warnings for collateral loss or penalty fees.
- Integration with other DeFi actions to avoid double counting.
How does Cryptotax handle your Aave transactions for tax purposes?
Our tax engine translates complex DeFi activities into recognisable categories for the Belgian tax return. The following overview shows what we automatically prepare for you.
Key tax considerations
-
Interest as movable income.
Interest received via aTokens or incentives is booked as movable income. We quantify the EUR value at the moment of crediting so you can declare it in section VII of the Belgian tax return.
-
Loans are not taxable.
Taking out a loan does not create a capital gain and is therefore not taxable. We record it as neutral cash flow, while repayment simply reduces the outstanding balance.
-
Liquidations = realisations.
When collateral is liquidated, a sale transaction arises. Our reports calculate the realised gain or loss including penalty fees so you can report this as miscellaneous income.
-
Collateral swaps & debt switches.
We treat collateral swaps as exchange transactions with valuation of both legs. Debt swaps (e.g. variable to stable) are classified as restructurings with no tax impact, but remain visible in the audit trail.
-
Flash loans and advanced DeFi.
Flash loans are in principle neutral as long as no net profit or loss is realised. If you achieve an arbitrage gain, we calculate the capital gain based on the proceeds received minus costs.
