How are Bitvavo transactions taxed in Belgium?
When you buy and sell crypto through Bitvavo, your gains are in principle taxable in Belgium. The tax treatment depends on the type of transaction and your investor profile.
Gains on trading: When you sell crypto at a profit, that gain is taxable. The Belgian government introduced a 10% capital gains tax on realized crypto gains (approved by the Chamber on 3 April 2026, retroactive from 1 January 2026). The FIFO method (First In, First Out) is used to determine which purchase is matched to which sale.
Staking rewards: Do you receive staking rewards on Bitvavo? They are taxed as movable income at 30%, separately from any trading gains.
Capital gains: 10%
10% tax on realized crypto gains (approved April 2026) via the FIFO method.
Staking: 30%
Staking rewards are taxed as movable income, independently of trading.

Legally required method: the oldest purchase is sold first, calculated in euros.
Do you have to report your Bitvavo account to the CAP?
Short answer: no, not at the moment. The Central Point of Contact (CAP) of the National Bank of Belgium registers foreign bank accounts. Bitvavo is a Dutch crypto platform and for now does not fall under the CAP reporting obligation.
That does not mean, however, that your Bitvavo account is invisible to the tax authorities. Under the DAC8 directive, platforms such as Bitvavo report your transaction data directly to the tax authority. So the Belgian government already has access to your trading activity, even without CAP reporting.
The 10% capital gains tax on Bitvavo gains
The Belgian government introduced a 10% capital gains tax on realized gains from crypto assets (approved by the Chamber on 3 April 2026). This applies to all platforms, including Bitvavo.
How does it work? When you sell crypto for more than you paid for it, the difference (the gain) is taxable at 10%. The calculation uses the FIFO method: at each sale, the oldest purchase is used as the cost basis. All amounts are converted to euros on the day of the transaction.
Example: You buy 1 ETH for €1,500 in January 2026 and sell that ETH for €2,000 in June 2026. Your gain is €500, on which you pay 10% tax: €50.
Step-up: historical gains are exempt
Did you already buy your crypto on Bitvavo before 2026? Then you are protected by the step-up rule. The market value of your crypto on 31 December 2025 becomes your new tax cost basis. Only the increase in value from 1 January 2026 is taxable, gains from before 2026 remain exempt.
Example: In 2023 you bought 1 ETH on Bitvavo for €1,800. On 31 December 2025 that ETH was worth €3,400, which becomes your step-up cost basis. If you sell the ETH in 2026 for €4,000, your taxable gain is only €600 (not €2,200). The historical gain of €1,600 stays fully exempt.
With step-up (actual)
Gain: €4,000 − €3,400 = €600
Within the annual €10,000 exemption → €0 tax
Without step-up (hypothetical)
Gain: €4,000 − €1,800 = €2,200
Historical gains would be taxed unfairly.
Cryptotax applies the step-up automatically to all your pre-2026 Bitvavo lots. More about the step-up rule →
Staking rewards on Bitvavo: movable income
Bitvavo offers staking for various cryptocurrencies. The rewards you receive are taxed in Belgium as movable income at a rate of 30%.
Important distinction: Staking rewards are not capital gains. They are taxed separately, regardless of whether you later sell the underlying crypto at a profit or a loss. Receiving the reward itself is the taxable moment, valued at the euro exchange rate on the day of receipt.
Cryptotax recognizes staking rewards automatically in your Bitvavo CSV export and shows them separately in your tax report. That way you know exactly how much movable income you have to declare, separated from your trading gains.
30% withholding tax
Staking rewards fall under movable income, separate from capital gains.
Day of receipt
The euro value on the day you receive the reward determines the taxable amount.
DAC8: Bitvavo reports to the tax authorities
Since the introduction of the DAC8 directive, crypto platforms in the EU are required to report their clients' transaction data to the tax authority of the country where the client lives.
What does this mean for you? Bitvavo shares your trading activity, including buy and sell transactions, deposits and withdrawals, with the Belgian tax authorities. The tax authority can cross-check this data against your tax return.
This makes it all the more important to declare your crypto taxes correctly. With Cryptotax you have a complete overview that matches what Bitvavo reports, so your tax return is airtight.
