Why Orbiter is popular

  • Transfers between Arbitrum, Optimism, zkSync, Starknet and more.
  • Fast finality (10-20 seconds) thanks to maker liquidity.
  • Low gas costs through minimal contract interaction on the source side.
Capital gains tax 2026: The capital gains tax law was approved by the Chamber on 3 April 2026. Since 1 January 2026 you pay 10% on crypto capital gains above €10,000/year. Cryptotax calculates this automatically. More info →

What exactly is Orbiter Finance?

Orbiter Finance positions itself as an "Ethereum Acceleration Engine": a decentralized cross-rollup bridge that uses zero-knowledge technology to move assets safely and cheaply between Ethereum and Arbitrum, Optimism and other L2s.

Maker architecture

On the source chain you send tokens directly from your wallet to a maker address. Smart contracts only live on the destination side. This avoids expensive contract calls on the source and makes settlement faster.

Roles in the protocol

  • Senders initiate the bridge from their own wallet.
  • Makers mirror the transfer and deposit the equivalent on the destination chain.
  • Submitters / arbitrageurs ensure makers follow the rules and trigger refunds if needed.
  • Dealers build UIs and integrations on top of the Orbiter API/SDK.

Fee structure explained

  • Withholding fee covers gas that the maker pays in advance on the destination.
  • Service fee is a percentage of the bridged amount.
  • Source gas remains visible as a normal L1/L2 transaction cost.

OBT tokenomics

OBT (max. supply 10 billion, approx. 4.9 billion in circulation) acts as a governance and utility token. Makers can use it to build collateral, while the community gains a say in upgrades such as the planned "Vizing" omni-rollup infrastructure.

How does Cryptotax support Orbiter activity?

We link bridge events on the source and destination chain to reconstruct one coherent story. You know exactly what left, what arrived, which maker was involved and how much in fees you paid.

Cross-chain matching

Our engine detects the outgoing send on chain A and matches it with the incoming receive on chain B, including asset type and timestamps. This avoids double-counting and keeps it a simple movement in your portfolio.

Fee analysis

  • We split service fee, withholding fee and gas so your cost basis stays clear.
  • All costs are converted to EUR at the transaction moment for tax deductibility.
  • Any compensation from disputes or arbitration is tagged separately.

Network coverage

We support all major L2s that Orbiter has live (Arbitrum, Optimism, zkSync Era, Starknet, Loopring) plus EVM chains such as Polygon and BNB Chain. New networks are added automatically as soon as on-chain data becomes available.

OBT rewards

  • OBT staking or maker rewards are recorded as income with EUR valuation.
  • Airdrops or community incentives are distinguished from ordinary transfers.
  • We retain proof so your accountant can easily verify the origin.

Tax considerations for Orbiter Finance

Bridges generally do not trigger a taxable capital gain, but the details matter. Below you can see how we classify each step according to Belgian best practices.

Key tax rules

  • Bridging = a transfer, not a sale.

We mark the send/receive as a single internal transfer so you do not report unnecessary capital gains. Only when the bridge includes a swap do we flag a potential taxable capital gain.

  • Fees reduce your cost price.

Service fees and withholding fees are recorded as additional costs. Your accountant can deduct them or take them into account in later disposals.

  • Disputes and refunds have an audit trail.

If a maker fails and a refund follows, we link the restitution to the original bridge. This keeps your history logical and prevents double income.

  • OBT rewards are taxable.

OBT received through staking, liquidity incentives or airdrops is recorded as movable income with EUR valuation at the moment of receipt. Later sales fall under capital gains or losses.

  • Multi-chain context remains visible.

We retain chain IDs, maker addresses and bridge IDs so you have evidence for the tax authority or auditor. This makes it easy to show that the transaction was an asset transfer.
