This knowledge article explains which cryptocurrency transactions are subject to Belgian tax and which are not.
Taxable Transactions
Sale to Fiat Currency
Converting crypto to euros triggers capital gains tax at 10%.
Crypto-to-Crypto Swaps
Trading one cryptocurrency for another (e.g. Bitcoin to Ethereum) is treated as a taxable sale, even without a fiat conversion.
Payments with Crypto
Using digital assets to buy goods/services is considered a taxable event at the moment of the transaction.
Staking Rewards and Income
"Staking rewards, yield farming proceeds and similar rewards are considered income at market value on receipt" (rewards are treated as income at fair value on receipt).
NFT Sales
Selling NFTs at a profit triggers capital gains tax.

Grey Areas
The article notes that DeFi transactions and hard fork tokens exist in a regulatory limbo with limited Belgian precedent. For airdrops, circular 2026/C/74 (marginal no. 128) has brought more clarity: no tax on receipt, acquisition value zero. We treat hard forks the same way by analogy.
