On 28 October 2026 a cyberattack took down digital services of the FPS Finance (FOD Financiën), including MyMinfin and Tax-on-web. As a result, tax returns that were due on 31 October can now be filed up to and including Monday 16 November 2026. If you still have a return with crypto income waiting, you have two extra weeks.
🛡️ What happened?
The FPS Finance was hit by a cyberattack and took digital services offline as a precaution. According to VRT NWS, citizens could temporarily no longer view or file their tax return. The FPS says there are currently no indications of a data breach and that it is following the situation closely.
The FPS immediately acknowledged that this affects deadlines in the near future and promised sufficient extra time. That date is now known: according to Baker Tilly, the deadline has been extended to 16 November 2026 for returns and notifications whose original deadline had not yet passed on 28 October.
📅 Who does the extension apply to?
The extension applies to returns that were not yet overdue on 28 October. For individuals this mainly concerns personal income tax returns with specific income, such as:
- profits or earnings from a self-employed activity or liberal profession;
- remuneration of company directors or of an assisting spouse;
- foreign professional income.
For these returns the deadline ran until 31 October, also if you file through an authorised representative. The new date therefore also applies to your bookkeeper or accountant. Baker Tilly also mentions, among others, withholding tax on movable income, corporate income tax for financial years that ended on 31 March 2026, and returns with an individual deadline that had not yet passed.
Note: if your deadline had already passed before 28 October, it does not move. An employee whose only extra income was staking had until 19 July 2026. If you filed such a return without your crypto, you can no longer amend it online via Tax-on-web, but you can contact the competent tax office, for example through the contact form in MyMinfin.
✅ What should you still do?
- Check that your deadline really moves. If in doubt, ask your representative or check the official channels of the FPS Finance. For a number of categories, such as non-resident returns, it is not entirely clear yet.
- Map your 2025 crypto activity. Import your wallets and exchanges into Cryptotax. Staking rewards, lending and airdrops are valued at the moment of receipt. You can read more about the approach in our guide on declaring crypto and in our article on staking that is missing from your tax return.
- Do not wait until the last day. When MyMinfin restarts after an attack, it will be busy straight away. A new extension round is not guaranteed.
The extension changes nothing about what you have to declare, only until when. And the tax authorities are increasingly watching: the next step is DAC8.
