How does the Belgian crypto tax calculator work?

What it is

The Tax Calculator is a free tool on cryptotax that lets you quickly estimate your Belgian crypto tax. You answer three questions about your investment style, and the calculator determines your profile and calculates an estimated tax liability based on the new 2026 rules.

The calculator is available without an account, at cryptotax.be/functies/belasting-calculator.

How it works

Step 1: Answer three profile questions

The calculator asks you three questions to determine your investor profile:

  1. Holding period: how long do you hold crypto on average?
  2. Concentration: is your portfolio concentrated in one or a few coins?
  3. Leverage: do you use margin trading, futures or other leveraged products?

Based on your answers, you are classified as:

  • Normal management (10% on gains above €10,000)
  • Speculative (33% on net capital gains)
  • Professional (progressive up to 50% + social contributions)

Step 2: Enter your profit and loss figures

After the profile is determined, you enter:

  • Total acquisition cost: what you paid in total for your crypto
  • Current or sale value: the proceeds from your sales
  • Pre-2026 capital gains (optional): gains realised before 1 January 2026, which are exempt from the new rate

Step 3: Review your calculation

The calculator shows in real time:

  • Gross profit
  • Applicable exemption (€10,000 for normal management)
  • Taxable base
  • Estimated tax

For the "professional" profile, the calculator shows a progressive tax calculation per bracket.

What the calculator takes into account

  • The new 10% rule for normal management (effective from 1 January 2026)
  • The €10,000 annual exemption
  • The exemption of pre-2026 capital gains
  • Progressive tax brackets for professional activity

Limitations of the calculator

The calculator gives an estimate, not an official calculation. It does not take into account:

  • Individual transactions and cost basis per coin
  • Staking rewards (taxed separately at 30%)
  • DeFi complexity (liquidity pools, bridging, etc.)
  • Carried-over exemption from previous years

For a complete and correct calculation, use the full cryptotax tool after importing all your transactions.

From calculator to full report

After the calculator, you can immediately create an account and connect your exchanges. cryptotax then recalculates everything based on your actual transaction history and generates an official tax report.

Frequently asked questions

Q: Is the calculator free? A: Yes, completely free and without an account.

Q: Can I also use the calculator for previous years? A: The calculator is calibrated to the 2026 rules. Different rules apply to transactions before 2026. See Crypto Tax 2026 for the full overview.

Q: My profile is not correct. Can I adjust it manually? A: Yes. At the bottom of the results there is a toggle that lets you set your profile manually to view the calculation for a different scenario.
