Step-by-step guide to reporting crypto capital gains in your Belgian personal income tax return via Tax-on-Web or MyMinfin.
How to include crypto in your personal income tax return in Belgium
When to use this
Every Belgian taxpayer who has realised taxable crypto capital gains in the previous year must include them in the annual personal income tax return. The return is typically filed in spring via Tax-on-Web or MyMinfin.
Which code to use
Crypto capital gains treated as "miscellaneous income" (divers inkomen) are declared under:
- Code 1444 / 2444 (miscellaneous income - capital gains tax of 10%)
The exact codes can change from year to year. Check the instructions of FOD Financiën (the Belgian tax authority) for the current assessment year or consult your tax adviser.
What you need for the declaration
- Your Cryptotax tax report (see generating your tax report)
- Access to Tax-on-Web or MyMinfin (via itsme or electronic identity card)
Step 1: Generate your tax report
Generate your report for the previous tax year in Cryptotax. The report contains the total taxable amount you need to declare.
Step 2: Log in to Tax-on-Web or MyMinfin
Go to taxonweb.be or myminfin.be and log in with itsme or your electronic identity card.
Step 3: Find the Miscellaneous income section
In the tax return, navigate to the Miscellaneous income section. Look for the code for capital gains on digital assets or cryptocurrency.
the "Miscellaneous income" section in Tax-on-Web with the relevant code highlighted
Step 4: Enter the amount
Enter the taxable amount as stated in your Cryptotax tax report. Also enter any capital losses if applicable.
Step 5: Keep your supporting documents
Keep your Cryptotax report and the original export files from your exchanges. The Belgian tax authorities may ask for substantiation of your declaration.
Reporting foreign accounts
If you hold crypto on a foreign exchange (e.g. Kraken, Coinbase, Binance), you are in principle also required to report this to the Centraal Aanspreekpunt (CAP) via the tax return. Consult your tax adviser on this.
Frequently asked questions
Q: Do I need to declare crypto if I have not made a profit? A: If you have made a net loss, you generally do not owe tax, but it may be advisable to declare your losses so they can be offset against future gains.
Q: My accountant is asking for an overview of my crypto. What do I give them? A: Give them the PDF tax report from Cryptotax. It contains all the necessary information, including the methodology used.
Q: What if I forgot to file a declaration in previous years? A: You can file a corrected declaration or contact the tax authority. Consult a tax adviser for the right approach.
