TL;DR

How do you declare crypto in Belgium? Complete Tax-on-Web guide with all boxes, codes, the €10.000 exemption and the CAP report for your 2027 tax return.

How do you declare crypto in Belgium? For income year 2026 (declared in 2027) there are up to five sections that you may need to fill in via Tax-on-Web. This guide walks you through each box step by step.

This manual is written for Belgian citizens who file their own tax return: no accountants, no jargon. We walk step by step through the boxes that are relevant for crypto: from reporting foreign accounts to the new capital gains tax that was approved by the Chamber on 3 April 2026.

Important up front: the new capital gains tax (10% on profits above the €10.000 exemption) applies retroactively from 1 January 2026. For older positions a step-up applies based on the market value on 31 December 2025. FIFO is mandatory.

📋 What do you need to declare?

For most Belgian crypto users, five sections come into play. Below is an overview of the boxes and codes you will encounter in Tax-on-Web (assessment year 2027, income year 2026).

Type of income Box Code Example
Capital gains (normal management) New capital gains tax box TBD (not yet published by FOD) BTC sold at a profit
Speculative profit XV - Miscellaneous income 1440 / 2440 Day trading profit
Staking/lending rewards VII - Movable income 1444 / 2444 Kraken staking
Professional income IV - Professional income standard codes Professional trading
Foreign account XIII - Foreign accounts checkbox Binance, Kraken

The exact codes for the new capital gains tax on crypto have not yet been published by FOD Financiën (the Belgian tax authority). Cryptotax will update the Tax-on-Web mapping as soon as they become available.

🏦 Step 1: Report your foreign accounts to the CAP

Do you have an account with Binance, Kraken, Coinbase or another non-EU exchange? Then you must report that account separately to the Central Point of Contact (CAP) of the National Bank. That is a declaration separate from Tax-on-Web, with its own deadline.

Bitvavo is an exception: because it is a Dutch (EU) payment institution, it does not fall under the CAP reporting obligation. The same applies to self-managed wallets (MetaMask, Ledger, Rabby): these are not "accounts" in a tax sense.

After your CAP report you receive a reference number. You need that number when you tick box XIII in Tax-on-Web. More details in our CAP guide for crypto.

📊 Step 2: Calculate your capital gains (FIFO)

Since 2026 Belgium mandatorily applies FIFO: First In, First Out. On each sale, the oldest purchased unit is "used up" first to determine the cost basis. That applies per asset, across all your wallets and exchanges.

For crypto you already held before 1 January 2026, the step-up rule applies: your cost basis is reset to the market value on 31 December 2025. If you bought 1 BTC for €20.000 in 2021 and it was worth €90.000 on 31/12/2025, then in 2026 you start with a cost basis of €90.000, not €20.000.

A concrete example: you buy 0,5 ETH on 15 March 2026 for €1.500 and another 0,5 ETH on 10 June 2026 for €1.800. On 5 September 2026 you sell 0,5 ETH for €2.200. FIFO says: you sell the first lot (€1.500 basis), so the capital gain = €2.200 - €1.500 = €700.

Keeping track manually is difficult once you have more than a few transactions, especially with DeFi, bridges or cross-chain swaps. Cryptotax performs this FIFO calculation automatically and delivers an audit-ready report that maps one-to-one onto the Tax-on-Web boxes. Try it for free via the Cryptotax homepage.

📝 Step 3: Fill in Tax-on-Web

Log in to Tax-on-Web via MyMinfin with your itsme or electronic identity card. Choose "My tax return" and navigate to the relevant boxes.

Box XIII - Foreign accounts

Tick that you have a foreign account if applicable (Binance, Kraken, Coinbase, Bybit, OKX, and so on). Enter the country and link the CAP reference number you obtained from the NBB.

Box VII - Movable income (codes 1444 / 2444)

This is where you declare your staking and lending rewards. The amount must be in EUR based on the market value at the moment you received the reward. On this amount you pay 30% withholding tax on movable income. Code 1444 is for the filer, 2444 for the partner in a joint tax return.

Box XV - Miscellaneous income (codes 1440 / 2440)

Intended for speculative crypto profits (taxed at 33%). Under the new capital gains tax for normal management this box would in principle remain empty for passive long-term investors. However, anyone who day-trades or frequently uses high leverage still falls under speculative: read our explanation of the capital gains tax for the threshold.

Box IV - Professional income

Only applicable if you trade structurally and professionally (organised, on a large scale, with a profit motive). Here progressive rates up to 50% apply, plus social contributions. In doubt? Request a ruling: see our guide on professional crypto tax.

New capital gains tax box

For realised capital gains in 2026 under normal management. 10% on the amount above the €10.000 annual exemption. The exact codes had not yet been released by FOD Financiën at the time of publication of this article: follow updates via MyMinfin or via Cryptotax.

For a detailed mapping per exchange and transaction type: see our Tax-on-Web mapping page.

🔢 Step 4: Review and submit

Before you click "Validate and send", check these items:

  • Total capital gain matches your Cryptotax report (FIFO, step-up applied).
  • Movable income is stated in EUR at the moment of receipt (not at the moment of sale).
  • Box XIII ticked if you use a foreign exchange, including the CAP number.
  • No double counting: a swap from BTC to ETH is one capital gain event, not two.

The deadline for self-filing via Tax-on-Web is usually around mid-July: the exact date varies per assessment year. Consult financien.belgium.be for the official date. After submission, download the PDF receipt and keep it together with your Cryptotax report.

💡 Tips

  • Keep supporting documents for 7 years: exchange exports, wallet transactions, screenshots of rewards. Also read our checklist for supporting documents.
  • Apply FIFO consistently: do not switch to LIFO or HIFO halfway through. The Belgian tax authority expects one method per taxpayer.
  • In doubt about classification (normal management vs speculative vs professional)? Request an advance ruling from the DVB. That gives certainty for several years.
  • Use an audit-ready report: with Cryptotax you get the totals per box and per code on a silver platter. Also see our step-by-step plan for crypto declarations.
  • DAC8 is coming: for transactions from 1 January 2026, exchanges report directly to the Belgian tax authority, with the first forms in June 2027 and EU exchange by September 2027: under-reporting becomes visible.

❓ FAQ

When is the deadline?
The Tax-on-Web deadline for self-filing is usually around mid-July (the exact date differs per assessment year - check MyMinfin). The CAP report for foreign accounts is a separate procedure with its own timing: submit it in good time before your Tax-on-Web return.

What if I did not declare in previous years?
You can request a tax regularisation via a certified tax adviser. That avoids fines and criminal prosecution, but a regularisation levy applies on top of the normal tax. More on this in our guide on tax regularisation for crypto.

Can I give my accountant access?
Yes. Via a mandate in MyMinfin your accountant or tax adviser can submit the return on your behalf. You remain ultimately responsible for the accuracy of the data.

What if I made a loss?
Under normal management you pay no tax on a loss. Losses can however be offset within 2026 against other crypto capital gains in the same year, but they are not carryable forward to subsequent years (no loss carry-forward). With speculative or professional trading, losses are partly deductible within the same regime.
