How to connect an on-chain wallet to Cryptotax
You connect an on-chain wallet with your public wallet address. Cryptotax then reads the blockchain directly: your transfers, tokens, DeFi activity and internal transactions. No connection, approval or private key is required, and you never grant access to your funds.
What you need
- Your public wallet address (an address starting with 0x, for example from MetaMask, Rabby or a hardware wallet)
- An account on Cryptotax (see create account)
Which blockchains are supported
You can connect a wallet on these blockchains:
- Ethereum (L1 mainnet)
- Base (Coinbase L2)
- Arbitrum (L2)
Using the same address on multiple blockchains? Add it once per blockchain. Each network is read separately.
Step 1: Go to Wallets and choose add
- Log in to Cryptotax and go to Wallets.
- Click Add wallet/exchange in the top right. If you have no accounts yet, click Add your first wallet.
Step 2: Choose "On-Chain Wallet" and your blockchain
- Under Type choose the option On-Chain Wallet.
- Under Source choose the blockchain your wallet is active on: Ethereum, Base or Arbitrum.
Step 3: Paste your wallet address
- Paste your public wallet address in the Wallet address field. The 0x prefix is already there, so you do not need to type it again (if you paste the full address including 0x, that works too).
- Optionally give your wallet a Label, such as Main wallet or Hardware wallet. This helps you tell multiple wallets apart.
- Click Add wallet.
Step 4: Check the import
After adding, Cryptotax automatically starts fetching your transaction history in the background. This can take a few minutes for a wallet with a lot of activity. You can see the progress via the status bar on the Wallets page.
You can immediately add another account or go back to My accounts while the import runs.
What we fetch
For a connected wallet we read the complete on-chain history:
- Incoming and outgoing transfers of crypto and tokens
- DeFi activity (swaps, staking, lending, liquidity pools)
- Internal transactions from contracts
We only read publicly available on-chain data. There is no connection to your wallet and we can never execute or withdraw transactions.
Connecting multiple wallets
- You can add as many wallets as you like. Add all wallets you use or have used, including old wallets. An incomplete picture leads to an incorrect tax calculation.
- Use a label per wallet to distinguish them.
- Moving crypto between your own wallets is not a taxable sale. Cryptotax recognises transfers between your connected wallets, so your cost basis moves with the crypto correctly. Read more about which transactions are taxable and about hardware wallets and taxes.
Important notes
- Read-only: you only provide your public address. Never share your private key or seed phrase with anyone.
- Per blockchain: add the same address on Ethereum, Base and Arbitrum once per blockchain.
- Address format: paste your full address of 40 hexadecimal characters (after the 0x). ENS names (such as name.eth) cannot be entered directly - use the underlying 0x address.
Troubleshooting
- Error message "Enter a valid wallet address": check that you pasted the full address (40 characters after 0x) and that there are no spaces or extra characters.
- Transactions are missing: check that your wallet is added on the correct blockchain. Activity on Base or Arbitrum only appears if you also connect the wallet on that network.
- Activity on an exchange or via CSV: on-chain wallets only cover blockchain activity. Connect your exchange via an API connection or add your data via CSV import.
