What to do when your exchange connection fails in CryptoTax.be. Step-by-step solutions for API errors and connection problems.
An exchange connection in CryptoTax.be fails
What is the problem
When adding an exchange connection you receive an error message, or the synchronisation fails after you entered the API key.
Most common error messages
"Invalid API key" or "Authentication failed"
The API key or API secret is incorrect.
Solution: 1. Check that you copied the correct keys. Watch out for extra spaces before or after the key. 2. Check that you have not swapped the API key and the API secret. 3. For some exchanges (e.g. Kraken) you also need a passphrase in addition to the API key and secret. Check that this field is filled in correctly.
"Insufficient permissions"
The API key does not have the required read permissions.
Solution: Go back to your exchange and check which permissions are assigned to the key. Add the missing permissions or create a new key with the correct permissions. Consult the guide for your specific exchange: - Connect Kraken - Connect Bitvavo - Connect Coinbase - Connect Binance
"IP restriction" or "IP not whitelisted"
The API key is restricted to specific IP addresses and the IP address of CryptoTax.be is not on the list.
Solution: Go to the API settings on your exchange and remove the IP restriction, or add the IP address of CryptoTax.be (check the contact page for the correct IP).
"Rate limit exceeded"
The exchange has temporarily blocked API access because too many requests were made in a short time.
Solution: Wait 15 minutes and try the synchronisation again. This usually resolves itself automatically.
"Exchange not responding" or "Connection timeout"
The exchange API is temporarily unavailable.
Solution: Try again later. Also check the exchange status page to see whether there is an outage.
General steps to try
- Remove the connection and add it again.
- Create a new API key on the exchange and use that instead.
- Use CSV import as an alternative if the API connection keeps failing. See Importing transactions via CSV.
